A Cheese Wheel Cracking Record – With Samples!

Parm SignOn Saturday, March 9th, we attended the annual Parmageddon at our local Whole Foods. Talk about fun! Each year, the employees of the cheese department gather at each of the Whole Foods locations in the US, Canada, and the UK, and at exactly the same time, each store cracks open a giant wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano.

And each year, they break their previously held Guinness World Record for simultaneously cracking open the most wheels of cheese.

This year, it was well over 400! Momma Mia!

When a wheel of Parmigiano is opened, it is super intense – the smell hits the air, and you are overwhelmed by all of the goodness that pours out of there! Interestingly, the cheese will never smell or taste the same ever again – from that moment on, the taste and smell will continue to change since the cheese has now been exposed to air.

Of course, “hair and make-up” was called in to get the team ready….

Here’s the event as it unfolded – and of course, we bought some of that freshly opened bundle of tastiness to enjoy at home.

Ahhh….a small taste of Italy in Alpharetta, GA…..makes me want to add a freshly opened bottle of wine to complete the picture…

What a fun advent to be part of. The taste of your first chunk has to be wonderful.

  2. Now that’s a chunk of cheese! I’m laughing because my dog would have flooded the store with drool – the cheese thief especially loves parm & once ate a major wedge of it then looked very guilty and maybe a little bit sorry after.
Do you have a Wegman’s in your area? I’ve got to tell you what a cheese department – over 3,000 cheeses & the sales people know & have tried them all. What my daughter & I really love is that you can taste test ANY cheese, yes even the one that goes for $75/lb with no problem at all.

    • No Wegman’s here..but do have a Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. Plus, did I mention that our best friend works for a specialty foods company? Oh, and did I mention he sells cheeses from around the world? Oh…so sorry I forgot! LOL! We do indeed get in our cheese tasting around here, too. I can just picture Lola and the puddle / lake of drool…

      • Ah man, a friend who works for a specialty food company? You’ve got it made! I also take it that you’re not lacking in cheese options. That Lola can smell parm even when she’s in the back yard. It’s either that or somehow she knows when I’m getting the grater out but I always shave some for her & crack up because it’s so sharp it always gets her salivary glands way in the back of her throat. She’ll stand there with the tongue continuing to go for a good 10 minutes after the cheese is gone.

  3. i LOVE parmaggedon! i hope you took some home, that stuff is amazing!!!!!
