Our friends are always curious, asking why we visit the same restaurants over and over and over again in Italy. Well, it’s hard to explain……..a lot of people only “travel” to Italy. We tend to think of ourselves as “repeat visitors who pretend that we live there part-time“……… It seems that there are just so many tourists who travel to a place just once, never to be seen again by the proprietor of the restaurant. Where’s the fun in that?
We, on the other hand, tend to frequent the ones with the best service, great food, and lovely owners who like to share stories, photos, and memories with us – year after year!
So, like it says “When it’s THIS good, why so anywhere else?”
Just take a look for yourself.
Each time we go to Pisa, Italy, we visit RISTORANTE LO SCHIACCIANOCI (The Nutcracker – as in the ballet). The owners, Giovanni and his sweet wife, Serenella, always are delighted to see us. Each year, we bring a photo or two to share with them from our last visit. And this year, we packed a cute little set of Nutcracker salt and pepper shakers to present to them at dinner time. What fun! (Not your typical tourist acts, eh?)
Here’s the spread we enjoyed – buon appetito!
And of course dessert….
Which we did indeed seem to enjoy…
Did someone say “Grappa?”…..
Oh I’m with you. I love trying new places but as you say, when you find a winner why not return. I love being in a restaurant – anywhere – where the owner remembers you & treats you as a special guest. I think that is the absolute greatest thing you did bringing them a gift! They’ll always remember you & thank you for showing that not all American travelers are obnoxious louts. I bring little gifts for my pal Pino in Boston & he loves that.
Now tell me, do you really like the grappa? Whoa, I’ve tried it & it brought a tear to my eyes.

About that grappa…..as long as you don’t mix it with Limoncello, you are OK…and since they did not have Limencello, I guess we were ok…It is pretty potent stuff! Not my preferene, but lordy lordy, I do hate to offend anyone by saying “No, Grazie”… 🙂

I know exactly what you mean about refusing the grappa – you can’t do it. About the best I can do is take a little sip & slide it toward my husband (even he has a hard time with it but hey, that’s his job).
Do you like the limoncello? I have a few bottles of that that I haven’t opened yet because I’d tried it one place & it seems to have sort of a diesel aftertaste. Do you think brand might play a part in that or do they really make it with diesel fuel?

Definitely rocket fuel – not met a Grappa that I really like. But, that Limoncello – love it icy cold at the end of the meal…yum!

It is so worth the visit. Guide books don’t do Pisa justice – there is MUCH more to the city than the Leaning Tower.
